The Lost Film

Known to many as the King of “Spud-sploitation”, Idaho-based filmmaker Malcolm Stephens began filming “Hellcats Highway!” in early 1982.

It was to be his final production after a run which included “Sin Alley”, “Halo Falls”, “Double Crossing” and “Biker Broads With Issues”.

Continuing his practice of self-distribution, Malcolm’s filmmaking career came to an end with the disastrous “Logan Drive-In Riot” of 1983.

Malcolm barely managed to get away from the catastrophe with his film print and his life. Narrowly escaping the ravenous soccer moms horrified by the terror he had exposed them to, Malcolm swore that it was a terror that he would never screen again.

Malcolm Stephens passed away in early 2020 of complications rising from Diabetic Ketoacidosis. He had no family but gifted his cinematic legacy to his novice screenwriter and editor on Hellcats, Mack Lewis.

Within his storage unit were untold cinematic treasures: his early short films, the features, posters, lobby cards, newspaper ad slicks, and the only known print of “Hellcats Highway!” in pristine condition.

It is currently being readied for its triumphant return to cinemas.
